Behavioural Ecology of Bats

Dates: noon on 8 August to late evening 20 August August 2004.  This means arrival at, and departure from the field course location.

Total Enrolment: 15

Locations: Queen’s University Biology Station (Chaffeys Locks, Ontario) and nearby study sites.

Cost: TBA

Prerequisite: proof of pre-exposure vaccination for rabies. Rabies pre-exposure shots must be arranged by the student. Details will be provided in the course outline that will be distributed in May (2004) to  students who have enrolled.  The rabies shots could cost as much as $300.00 (it is not covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan and some other plans).

Course Description: We will use field studies of bats to explore the ways of working with animals in the field. The bat work is designed to give students hands-on experience with techniques for sampling and studying bats, including capture, identification, handling, marking, and monitoring their echolocation calls.  Field work will be supplemented by student seminars and lectures that cover general and specific background on a range of topics.  We will try to arrange for the course participants to make a public presentation about bats.

Course handout: a detailed course handout, including seminar assignment, will be sent to registered students by early May 2004.

Grading: Student seminars .... 20% of final grade; Essay/report incorporating analysis of data collected on the course ..... 40% of final grade. Participation ... 40% of final grade.
