The document of this link outlines some suggestions for what should be in the various sections of your paper. Some of the suggestions may not apply to your case, and therefore, the suggested template should only be used as a guide and not as a rigid formating tool. This document is a modification, for the purposes of this course, of a document written by Dr. David Holdsworth at the Robarts Research Institute to help his students plan their publications. We are indebited to Dr. David Holdsworth.

The combination of the introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion must not be longer than 15 pages. The paper is to be written with one inch margins, with a font of no smaller than 12 point, and double spaced. You can find the instructions to authors on the Development web page. You must use the citation format of Development. You will cite the Biology 4540g lab manual for the materials and methods; however, all other citations must be made to the primary scientific literature. Citation of the primary research literature does not include lecture notes or Web sites.

You are required to submit an electronic version of your lab report to www.turnitin.com (see instructions below and follow them) and a printed copy to me by April 5th 2012.

Abbreviations for fushi tarazu change depending on what you are referring to.

Full name Abbreviation
gene(DNA) fushi tarazu ftz
mRNA FTZ
phenotype ftz
protein Fushi tarazu FTZ

Note the difference in caps and whether it is in italics or Roman typeface.

TA's NOTES:

The lab report should be written as one experiment that studies the function of ftz in Drosophila development. The discussion should attempt to link the experiments together, you may need to refer to other publications to fill in any information that you feel is missing. Remember, this report should be written so that a student who did not take 4540g will understand what you did.

Also remember that I will be marking grammar and spelling so don't just trust your spell checker, carefully proof-read your paper before you hand it in.

Submission to turnitin.com

Your papers must be submitted to turnitin.com before a mark will be assigned. Turnitin.com is a plagiarism checker. The sections of your paper that have to be submitted to turnitin.com are your title, abstract, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, figure legends. You should not submit your reference list because, as is expected, most of you will cite the same references which turnitin.com will see as plagiarism.

Two things you need for submission of your report.

Class ID: 4711563

Enrollment password: 4540FTZpap
