COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Humans are having a direct and measurable impact on the composition and cycling of elements of the earth. The key to understanding these influences is global biogeochemical cycles. Biogeochemistry is the study of how living systems influence, and are influenced by, the geology and chemistry of the earth. We will discuss processes and reactions governing global biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and anthropgenically active compounds like mercury and arsenic. Group discussions will incorporate current topics in anthropogenic alterations of natural cycles that lead to ecosystem degradation.
