Variations/Translations: The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory- Short Form (CMAI-SF). CMAI-SF is a shortened version of the CMAI containing 14 items which are rated by caregivers on a 5-point scale. A Chinese translation is also available.

Setting: Nursing and residential homes.

Method of Delivery: Given by nurse or health professional.

Description: The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) assesses 29 different agitated behaviours in patients with cognitive impairment. The agitated behaviours can be generalized into wandering, physical aggressions, inappropriate vocalizations, hoarding items, sexual disinhibitions and negativisms. A seven-point rating system is used to judge each of the 29 behaviours. The scale ranges from 1, the participant never engages in the specific agitated behaviour to 7, the participant manifests the behaviour on the average of several times an hour. Responses are based on observation of individual.

Scoring/Interpretation: The scales are looked over and recommendations are made to reduce areas that are associated with agitated behavior.

Quantitative/Qualitative: Quantitative

Validity (Quantitative): The Pearson product moment correlations ranged from 0.28 to 0.43 between the CMAI and the Behavioural Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease (Behave-AD). The Pearson product moment correlations between the CMAI and the Behavioural Syndromes Scale for Dementia (BSSD) ranged from 0.40 to 0.65.

Reliability (Quantitative): The internal consistency reliabilities ranged from .86 to .91. The inter-rater reliability ranged from .88 to .92.
