Description:
The CRS measures the severity of diagnosed depression. This
scale covers 17 symptoms of depression. The test is made up of 52
yes/no statements with the items presented in random order.
Scoring/Interpretation:
The maximum severity score is 52 (the total number of items).
Items are presented in a randomized order, which indicated the
response that is scored for each item. Each depressive response
counts one point toward the total score. It was proposed by
Carroll that a cutoff of 10 be used when the CRS is applied as a
screening instrument.

Validity
(Quantitative): Correlations between the CRS and the Hamilton
Rating Scale for Depression include 0.71, 0.80 0.75 and 0.79. The
CRS correlated 0.67 with a global rating of depression applied to
a sample of 232 outpatients. It also correlated 0.86 with the
Beck Depression Inventory.
Reliability
(Quantitative): Based on a mixed sample of patients, the
split-half reliability was 0.87 (based on multiple ratings). The
item total correlations ranged from 0.05 to 0.78 with a median of
0.55.
