Year: 1981, 1998

Domain: Psychological

Assessment Tool Category: Mental Health

Variations/Translations: French, Italian, and Chinese translations are available. There is also a 12 item version of the CRS.

Setting: Any setting

Method of Delivery: Self-administered.

Description: The CRS measures the severity of diagnosed depression. This scale covers 17 symptoms of depression. The test is made up of 52 yes/no statements with the items presented in random order.

Scoring/Interpretation: The maximum severity score is 52 (the total number of items). Items are presented in a randomized order, which indicated the response that is scored for each item. Each depressive response counts one point toward the total score. It was proposed by Carroll that a cutoff of 10 be used when the CRS is applied as a screening instrument.
