Description: The Pain Assessment for the Dementing Elderly (PADE) is a tool for the assessment of pain in individuals with advanced dementia. This tool was developed to help caregivers or health professionals assess a patient’s behavior that may indicate pain. This tool has three sections with a total of 24 items. The first part assesses physical components, including: observable facial expression, breathing pattern and posture. Pain intensity rating is the second component and, the third component includes assessments of activities of daily living (ADL).

Scoring/Interpretation: Items 1-12, 14 and 22-24 are rated using a Likert scale scoring 1-4 based upon equally spaced division on a line. Items 13 and 15-21 are multiple choices, scoring 1-4. The results are then added together. The older adult can score between 0 and 96, the lower scores are associated with more functional behavior and less pain.

Time to Administer: Approximately 5 – 10 minutes.

Availability: Can access the questionnaire online through Villanueva et al. (2003).

Quantitative/Qualitative: Quantitative

Validity (Quantitative): Results for validity of the test are encouraging. Participants who experience pain and tested this assessment tool showed significantly higher results then those who did not experience pain. Villanueva et al. (2003) confirms this tool is valid by significant correlation results such as r = .213, .076 and .296.

Reliability (Quantitative): Herr et al. (2008) and Villanueva et al. (2003) state the reliability coefficient were found to be adequate. Inter-rater reliability ranges from 0.54-0.95, stability ranges from 0.70-0.98 and internal consistency ranges from 0.24-0.88.

Comments: This assessment tool makes the assumption that the caregiver involved can successfully interpret the facial expression and pain experienced by the participant.
