This course investigates some of the profound philosophical questions raised by Freud's theory of the unconscious and its role in mental life. What are the implications of psychoanalysis for the notion of human autonomy? What is the status of Freud's theory as a "science," and what is its relation to the other natural sciences? What special role does "interpretation" play in the psychoanalytic method? How does Freud's theory stand in relation to modern critiques from various philosophical, scientific, and therapeutic points of view? Readings will include basic works of Freud along with those of important later commentators.
