EVALUATION AND FORMAT

1

Attendance and Participation  (Weekly)     20%

The two hour allotted for lectures/seminars are crucial so attendance and participation make up an important component of the course you should be prepared to answer a question on the topic at hand.  We expect to have guest speakers who are experts in their field who will either lecture and/or lead a discussion/question and answer period in the time allotted for lectures/seminars and/or guest speakers.  Some flexibility of the format may necessitate “free style” time management, although the readings and topics will be set for each week.  Failure to attend the classes will result in a 2% loss of marks for each class unless notification is made by telephone or e-mail prior to the class.

2

Written Assignment  (March 14, 2001)     40%

The Written Assignment will be due for submission on march 14, 2001 although extensions will be awarded as per the conditions in the Course Outline.  The Assignment will deal with one of the topics on the Lecture/Seminar Outline, the Issue Topic Readings, or will be an essay based upon the book An Introduction to the Convention on the Rights of the Child  by Christine Lundy.  In the first instance, the essay will consist of creating either a law, a social policy, or an educational policy in relation to the topic at hand.  The essay should not exceed 2000 words not including appendices or footnotes and bibliography.  Topics will be distributed before the end of the January along with more specific guidelines.  All essays are to be handed in on a floppy disk with a hard copy attached.

3

Final Examination  (Registrar)     40%

The Final Examination will be held in the April Examination Period with the date set by the Office of the Registrar.  It will be two hours in length in the essay format.  It will be based upon the assigned readings; the contents of the lectures; insights gleaned from discussion in class, and from the Guest Speakers
