-- Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE)
The two-hour examination
will consist of three parts--A, B, and C, each part being of equal value.
Part A could involve any of the following:
identifying, editing, correcting or explaining basic elements of sentence
structure and errors or inadequacies in usage as outlined in this table--

Typically, Part A might ask
multiple choice questions or offer sentences for correction
involving any of these topics.
Part B will involve sentences or prose
passages, questions on which willassess the comprehension
of ideas, errors or inadequacies, including the possibility of re-writing or
summarizing the material in |a manner appropriate to an alternative audience or
reader (see a sample
Summary).
Part C will involve the writing of an
essay on one of a choice of topics presented. The essay will be assessed on the
basis of relative strengths or weaknesses in categories such as the following:
Ideas and development |
Vocabulary |
Organization, unity and coherence |
Sentence structure and variety |
Grammar and usage |
Capitalization and punctuation |
Parts A, B and C will be of
equal value and equal time. A grade of SAT (Satisfactory) must be achieved in
the examination. SAT in Writing 200
will be recorded on the transcript. A
FAIL will not be recorded and
a student may sit the Writing 200 examination without restriction until SAT is
achieved.
