Fungi have been useful for studying extranuclear (= cytoplasmic) inheritance.
Typically identified because of:-
- 1. Maternal inheritance (inherited through female parent - often contributed the most cytoplasm) - so reciprocal crosses give different results.
- 2. Shows non-Mendelian ratios
Due to genes on mitochondrial DNA or plasmid DNA
e.g Poky (Neurospora), petite colonies ( yeast)
