READING LIST for CHEMISTRY 211a
For Lectures
No required text book BUT almost
all the lectures are keyed to Kaim, Schwederski
& Klein, and partly to
Lippard-Berg and Bertini et al. with
connecting references also to the Kaim, and Roat-Malone.
Recommended Text Books I recommend
you find them in the library and once every 1-2 weeks check the page references
given for each lecture. While no
specific questions will be taken from these
Recommended Text Books I
recommend you find them in the library and once every 1-2 weeks check the page
references given for each lecture. While
no specific questions will be taken from these books for exams, they help
expand and explain the concepts given in the lectures.
2nd edition of Kaim, Schwederski
& Klein (KS&K)- “Biolnorganic
Chemistry: Inorganic elements in the chemistry of life” in the book store ISSN:
1939-5175
Biological Inorganic Chemistry – Structure and Reactivity by Bertini, Gray, Stiefel, and

Concepts and Models in Bioinorganic
Chemistry by Kraatz and Metzler-Nolte. TAYSTK QU130.C743 2006. (On heavy demand (2-hour loan) at the
Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry by
Lippard & Berg.
TAYSTK QU 130.L765 1994 (In the Taylor Library and in the book
store.)
Bioinorganic chemistry: a short course by Roat-Malone. QU130.R628b (On heavy demand (2-hour loan) at the
Taylor Library and in the book store.)
Bioinorganic chemistry: inorganic elements in the chemistry of life: an
introduction and guide
by Kaim and Schwederski. QU130.K13 1994 (On heavy demand (2-hour loan) at the Taylor
Library.)
The biological chemistry of the elements: the inorganic chemistry of
life by da Silva and Williams. QU4.S586b 2001 (On heavy demand (1-day loan) at the
Taylor Library.) A very interesting book but hard to follow at
times.
Housecroft and Sharp “Inorganic Chemistry” 1st or 2nd
Edition
For Inorganic Chemistry, first use your 1st year text, then
Housecroft and Sharpe 1st and 2nd editions are in the
library, the 2nd edition is on 2 hr loan. These books
both editions, have good Bioinorganic descriptions at the back; an inexpensive
2nd hand copy would be useful.
There are a number of other books with very interesting material. I list them here for your interest.
Prof. Baird’s “Environmental Chemistry”, used in Chemistry 210a, has a
very nice chapter on toxic metals (Ch.11) including Hg, Pb,
Cd, As, and Cr.
e books
for exams, they help expand and explain the concepts given in the lectures.
There is a single copy on 2 hr loan in the
Taylor Library of all Bioinorganic books. The Housecroft and Sharp “Inorganic
Chemistry” 1st or 2nd Edition is extremely useful if you
need a refresher for your 1st year chemistry. If you can find an
inexpensive, used Biochemistry book that will help for the biological material.
