PREREQUISITES: BSC GEOLOGY WITH 3 YEARS FIELD EXPERIENCE

COURSE CONTENT: Metallogenic Theory - global spacetime distribution of hydrothermal ore deposits, relationship to Wilson Cycles, deposit classification.  Metallogenic Models - Volcanic Massive Sulphides, Pegmatites, Skarns, Porphyries, Epithermals, Archean Lode Gold, Proterozoic Iron Oxide Breccias, Diamonds.

COURSE FORMAT: A 10 day modular course with 60 contact hours, 3 hour AM lectures, 3 hour PM tutorials/labs.  Part I - Theory, Part II - Models.

GRADING: A take home style exam due at the end of the course (50%), written report on one type of deposit focussing on world class examples due 1 month after end of course (50%).

COURSE CREDIT: Half Course Eqivalent

COURSE COST: Offered to full or part-time students at UWO or LU:  non-students, full course $1500, part course $150 per day

SCHEDULE:

    PART 1 METALLOGENIC THEORY

 DAY 1 AM - Introduction to global metallogeny (globmet.htm)
    PM - Classification of ore deposits, methods of ore petrology (classmeth.htm)

 Day 2  AM - Continental rifts/mantle plumes: magmatic ores in mafic igneous complexes
   PM - Passive continental margins/sill sediment complexes: iron  formations, SEDEX deposits

 Day 3  AM - Seafloor settings: ophiolites with podiform chromite, asbestos,  lateritic nickel, Cyprus-type VMS; greenstone belts with komatiitic  Ni, Noranda-type VMS; island arcs with Kuroko-type VMS
   PM - Active continental margins: Besshi-, Kieslager- and Bathurst-type   massive sulphide deposits in mixed volcanic/sedimentary seqences

 Day 4  AM - Collisional orogens: depth zoning of hydromagmatic pegmatite,skarn, porphyry and epithermal deposits
   PM - Orogenic collapse: lode and placer Au, Olympic Dam-type Fe-Cu-Au, red-bed Cu, unconformity U, and MVT Pb-Zn deposits

 Day 5  AM - Terminal cratons: laterites and evaporites
   PM - Alkaline igneous complexes: carbonatites and kimberlites

 Day 6  AM - Black Smokers
   PM - Ancient VMS systems

 Day 7  AM - Pegmatites
   PM - Skarns

 Day 8  AM - Porphyries
   PM - Epithermals

 Day 9  AM - Archean Lode Gold
   PM - Putonic and Porphyry Gold Systems

 Day 10 AM - Iron Oxide Breccias
   PM - Mantle metasomatism/Diamonds
