Note: after having added the events layer from the .dbf file, save as a stati.shp shapefile and a layer file. This will store the events data as a shapefile in the shapes directory and as a layer stored within the document. The layer will be stored as part of the .mxd document. However, the layer can also be stored as an independant file with the "Store as layer file" option. Other point layers can then be created by simply adding the shapefile, and changing the layer name, e.g. comments, rock type, bedding, and selecting different label or symbiology attributes.
