Geological Map of Canada (CD-ROM) Map D1860A Geological Survey of Canada _________________________________ About the CD-ROM ---------------- This CD-ROM contains several sets of digital data files (see \CANADA\DOC\ENGLISH\FILES.TXT for formats). Although the digital data was prepared with Arc/Info, it can also be accessed by several other operating systems and GIS packages. Directory Structure ------------------- The CD-ROM is divided into the following primary directories: \CANADA \DOC - English & French documentation \COVERS - Arc/Info 7 workspaces \E00 - Arc/Info Interchange 'Export' files \SHP - Arc/Info 'shape' files \SHPGEO - Arc/Info 'shape' files (geographic) \SURVIEW - Microsoft Windows viewing software (for 'shape' files) \UTIL - ANSI-DOS conversion utility Documentation ------------- All documentation is provided in 3 text formats and in 2 languages: \CANADA\DOC\ENGLISH - PC text files (.TXT) - Unix text files (.UNX) \CANADA\DOC\FRANCAIS - PC text files (.TXT) - Unix text files (.UNX) \CANADA\DOC\HTML - HTML text files (.HTM) (English, French) Documentation begins on HTML page INTRO_E.HTM (English) or INTRO_F.HTM (French) or on the corresponding INTRO.* text files in the ...\ENGLISH and ...\FRANCAIS directories. Note that the Internet Explorer, provided with pre-installed versions of Windows 95, is effectively obsolete and can not display HTML tables correctly. Use a newer version of the Web browser of your choice. Character Set ------------- All PC (.TXT) and Unix (.UNX) files contain ANSI accented characters: PC users should use Windows applications to view these files. ESRI Interchange Format files (*.E00, single precision) are provided in PC format and contain ANSI characters. For use on Unix, use the Unix "dos2unix -ascii" command to convert to Unix text format and preserve the ANSI characters. .DBF files also contain ANSI characters: you may need to use the AnsiConv utility (in \CANADA\UTIL) to convert to a DOS character set for use with some utilities. See \CANADA\DOC\README.TXT SurView (Microsoft® Windows TM) -------------------------------- A limited runtime version of SurView (a viewing application developed by the GSC to display geophysical, geological, and geochemical data) is provided on this CD-ROM in the \CANADA\SURVIEW directory. SurView can display and print the Arc/Info .SHP files in the \CANADA\SHP directory. Read the \CANADA\DOC\ENGLISH\SURVIEW1.WRI file for an overview of the installation and operation of SurView. Read the \CANADA\DOC\ENGLISH\SURVIEW2.WRI file for an overview of the .SHP files and the SurView-specific files that allow them to be displayed. Quick Start (Microsoft® Windows TM) ------------------------------------ This CD-ROM is a Microsoft® Windows TM 95/NT4 'Auto Play' CD-ROM, launching \INTRO.EXE when inserted (other Windows users can launch \INTRO.EXE manually). \INTRO.EXE provides an introduction to the CD-ROM and can launch WINTOUR.HLP. to provide a quick tour of the \CANADA\SHP\... 'shape' files. \WINTOUR.HLP contains hypertext links to launch SurView directly from the CD-ROM (no installation required) to view these files. Arc/Info (Ver. 7.03) on Unix (Solaris 2.4) ------------------------------------------ The Arc/Info coverages are located in the \CANADA\COVERS directory. Read the \CANADA\DOC\ENGLISH\DATABASE.TXT file for complete descriptions of the Arc/Info coverages. There is no Unix software supplied on this CD-ROM. Arc/Info on other platforms --------------------------- The Arc/Info coverages have been exported into ANSI Interchange Format (*.E00, single precision) files located in the \CANADA\E00 directory. These can be imported into Arc/Info on non-Unix systems. Other (Microsoft® Windows TM )/DOS-based GIS packages ---------------------------------------------------- The *.E00 files in \CANADA\E00 can be imported into several other GIS packages that import the .E00 format, including ArcView and MapInfo for Microsoft® Windows TM The Arc/Info coverages have been also exported into Arc/Info 'shape' (*.SHP) files, designed to be directly viewable by ArcView 2.
