Buying a bicycle in France
It is possible to buy a bicycle in France. A North American made, solid but light weight Marin with all the gadgets (handlebar gear change, brakes with a damping mechanism), purchased by my wife last summer, cost 2000FF (CAN$ 400), and an Aluminium touring bike for myself cost the same amount. Should we ever bring them back to Canada, we should be able to recuperate the 25% sales tax. You could also resell your bicycle to a pawnbroker in Paris for half to two-thirds its value.
When purchasing a bicycle, the front and back lights are included (a legal obligation), but you will need to buy a carrier (porte baggage) for your bicycle bags. Also, do not neglect to buy a gel seat cover, and, for those not used to cycling, a supply of aspirins!
