Fraser & Squair Fraser and Squair Textbook
Fraser and Squair were two University of Toronto French professors who brought out their textbook French Grammar and Reader, in 1901. It was used in Ontario Secondary Schools from 1901 - 1923, and a revised version was used from 1923 - 1936.

The entire 5-year French programme was contained in one book!

"At that time the goal was to translate from French into English and English into French with a little bit of oral practice because they wanted to give French respectability on a par with Latin and Greek. They were the classical studies and they were considered to be the intellectual challenge, and so for French to have a high level of interest and also respectability, they taught it the same way - translation in both directions with an odd little oral part."
