A lesson from Helen B. St. John's text |
"This book was a real revolution ! The revolution was that the grammar was in French on the one side, and the English translation on the next. The teachers could now teach the grammar in French and if the students didn't understand , they could check it out in English. The teacher was, then, to try to conduct the class in French, in simple French, so that students would understand. ""Another bombshell was that her book started with the first conjugation verbs and ends with the imperfect subjunctive. The kids in Grades 9 & 10 went from simple present tense right through to the imperfect subjunctive in 2 years. And remember, at that point there was no French taught in the elementary schools at all. Boy those kids had a foundation!"
