Research Interests:
While I have always been fascinated by the entire "long eighteenth-century," my personal research interests have tended to be focused on a period that might best be defined as "the later Stuarts," extending from the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 to the Hanoverian Succession in 1714. My tendency to find conventional period divisions somewhat restrictive is reflected, too, in my work with the Western Early Modern Seminar, which I have, in practice, very generously defined as a period extending as far back as the Medieval era, and forward to the end of the eighteenth-century. My work on a hypertext edition of Rump: Or an Exact Collection (1662) has also led me to focus on hypertext, particularly in relation to its intersections with bibliography, textual theory, and history of the book.
