Lexia 11
The fire represented so much more to Miriam than simply being a source of heat. Although it kept her warm and gave her a sense of security the fire also reminded her of a time when she had nothing. With each flicker of the flame she felt the harsh wind whiping her face, she heard the popping and crackeling of wood that wasn't quite dry enough to be burned and she felt the embers that were picked up by sudden gust and landed on her cold, dry skin. So much time had passed but the memories of those cruel days surfaced time and time again whenever Miriam looked at that fire a little longer than she had planned. |
