Midterm Examination 1

Please answer each question as completely as you can. If you are unsure about what the question is asking, ASK the instructor or TA. Say what you mean and mean what you say. You are free to use the textbook or your notes. You may use a laptop computer or programmable calculator but not a cellular phone. Show all of your steps. Be sure to put only your student number on the front page and put your name on the back page!

 

 

1. While talking to your psychic advisor on the ‘Psychic Hotline’ you were told to buy 3 lottery tickets. The psychic advises you that you will win on at least two of the tickets. If the probability of winning any prize is 1 in 75 what is the probability the psychic is right? (15 marks)

 

2. The fire station gets on average 4 calls per hour. What are the chances of (a) 6 calls between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm (10 marks), (b) 3 calls between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm (10 marks), (c) a total of 9 calls between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm (20 marks)?

 

3. Theoretically how many 4 letter words can be formed from the word ‘geography’? For our purposes the two gs are counted as different from each other. (Yes nonsense words count). (10 marks)

 

4. You have been hired to determine the optimal location for an ambulance station. You know that a prime consideration in your solution process is the distances between the demand points. From the graph determine the straight line distances between the 3 demand points A, B and C. (10 marks)

Of course later you realize that you actually need the windy road distance. P is set to .8. Find the distances between points A, B and C. (10 marks)

 

If area were in a downtown area what would the distances be? (5 marks)

 

5. For a normally distributed population with a mean = 40 and standard deviation of 4, what is the probability of a value being between 30 and 37? (10 marks)
