The vitamin A rich "golden rice" is expected to be available in the Indian market five to six years from now. Currently, experiments are being conducted to introduce the gene for vitamin A into the local variety - Oryza indica, using genetic engineering and cross breeding techniques. The golden rice was originally derived from the species grown in Switzerland - Oryza sativa. It has a beta-carotene gene, as well as genes from some bacteria.

Once suitable rice varieties have been established, biosafety and clinical tests would be conducted. Besides this, field trials would also be conducted.

According to an official, six local universities are participating in the project. They are Delhi University, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, the Central Rice Research Institute (Cuttack), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and the Directorate of Rice Research (Hyderabad).

The golden rice project was launched in India following a recent Indo-Swiss agreement, which enabled technology transfer from the inventors to India. The golden rice was developed by Professor Ingo Potrykus, a retired professor from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and Dr. Peter Bayer from the German University of Freiburg.
