In German, if one uses an infinitive with a modal verb, no additional element is required:
Ich kann schnell arbeiten. (I can work fast) [können is a modal verb]

If one uses an infinitive with a verb that is not a modal verb, the infinitive requires a "zu" that mirrors the "to" in English infinitives ("to work"):
Ich brauche heute nicht zu arbeiten. (I do not need to work today) ["brauchen" is not a modal verb]
