Often, beginners seem to model left-hand position on a picture of the violinist's left hand., with the characteristic index-finger curl. Here, the player is a guitarist by trade, and that's exactly what the hand position looks like! The finger position is not all that bad, but it all looks so fragile, somehow. To bring enough strength to bear to press the (relatively) huge double bass strings, it will probably be necessary to bring the arm around more–to get a more open "C" shape. Look again at the angle at the wrist, which tends to isolate the hand and fingers from the musculature of the forearm.
