Fair Treatment: Exploring Equity and Ethics in Government and AdministrationEquity and ethics are critical concepts and practices in democratic government and administration which has as a foundational precept that those encountered by government and administration are entitled to fair treatment. This course explores aspects of law and practice related to equity and human rights and of law which regulates government ethics. More specifically, in the first term, beginning with a consideration of ideas of equity and ethics, it will explore concerns such as systemic discrimination and harassment in the workplace and administration and the policies related to and practices of employment and human rights regulation including affirmative action and employment equity. In the second term, the focus will be on ethics issues related to inappropriate administration and decision making, accountability and openness, and, the laws and practices related to government ethics regulation pertaining to such things as administrative justice, conflict of interest prevention, lobbyist regulation, privacy protection and access to information in government and public administration. |
