914 Research methods

This course introduces students to the research process. The principles and techniques discussed are suitable both for academic work (including the research project required later in the program) and for applied management and policy research. There are three components of the course. One is the study of research methods, which includes notions of theory and deductive approaches and proceeds through operationalization, survey design and the logic of experimentation. Second is the study of elementary statistics. This is done straightforwardly with coverage of simple descriptive statistics, sampling, measures of association, analysis of variance, and regression. Finally, students use the facilities of the micro-computer lab for practical applications of the material discussed in class.
