Quasi-Experimental Research
A group of educational psychologists at a large university wanted to test the effectiveness of a newly designed academic
improvement course. Students seeking academic help at the
university counselling centre were asked to participate in
a six-week course designed to improve study habits and academic skills. A sample of forty students judged to have serious deficiencies in reading comprehension and other study-related skills were selected for the program. Thirty of these students completed the program, whereas ten dropped out. Data analysis showed that post-treatment course grades were significantly higher than pre-treatment course grades, leading the psychologists to conclude that the course was effective in improving academic performance of at-risk students.
