Overview: In this assignment you will offer your interpretation of the "map" which is implicit in a film of your choice.
Length: 4-5 pages (typed, double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font)
Focus: Your main focus should be analyzing the "map" of your film. In this process you should:
- Use the terms of the map framework (terrain, goal, path) explicitly
- Clearly distinguish between these map elements
- Relate the film's map to other course concepts as appropriate, e.g.,
- how "secular" is the film's map?
- do we need to distinguish between "fantasy" elements of the map and those elements which are intended to be "realistic"?
- how does the film depict other religions (whether secular or more traditional), and how does this approach to other religions grow out of the map of the film?
- Balance clear analytical statements (general statements about the map in the film) with specific examples to support your analysis
Format: This is not a research essay, and I do not have specific expectations in terms of format. I do, however, expect you
to use proper grammar and spelling. Although some introduction and conclusion should be included, these need not be long and may only
consist of 1-2 sentences at the beginning and end of the paper. You should summarize your interpretation of the film in one sentence
at the end of the assignment (i.e., as your brief conclusion).
Criteria for Marking: When marking the papers I will be looking for:
- Proper use of English (grammar, spelling, style)
- Accuracy of analysis (does your interpretation account for the details of the film)
- A Balance of clear analysis with detailed examples
- Creativity and depth in analysis
Marking Sheet: The marking sheet which will be used in evaluating your film analysis assignments will be available here
after I return from Philadelphia.
