Instructions for using Turnitin.com  (all students must submit electronic versions of their term paper by the due date.


Step 1: You must first register yourself as a student at Turnitin.com.

To do so, go to Turnitin.com. Click User Login.
When that page comes up, click Click New User to Get Started.
Enter your full e-mail address and a password of your choice.
Note: while a Hotmail or Yahoo or similar account will work, Western strongly advises using your Western account (yourname@uwo.ca) as it is far less likely to crash or create problems with Turnitin.com.

Another page comes up which asks for your name, and several other pieces of information. You can ignore most of these fields (ones that are marked optional). You will need to select Canada. There are no provinces listed. But do put in your full first and last names. When you complete this task, you will now be able to log in using just your e-mail address and your password each time.


Step 2: You must join a class.

After logging in now that you are registered, you need to join our class.  This is where your class ID and your case sensitive class password come in. So here they are, depending on whether you are in Section 570 or Section 571:

Section 570:   CLASS ID:  1470363                enrollment password:    kerr570
 

Section 571:   CLASS ID:  1470369                enrollment password:    kerr571


Step 3: You must select an assignment.

After you get to your class, you will find an assignment page. All the assignments are or will be listed on this page. To submit an assignment, click on the appropriate assignment, and then press the Submit button. When you do this, you will be taken to a page in which you have to enter the title of your assignment, and the Assignment Number (which is a little pop-up box) listing all of the assignments. Press Next, and you will now have arrived at the essay submission page.

Step 4: Submitting your essay is exactly like sending an e-mail attachment.

    You are now at the page where you actually submit your essay. There are two methods that you can use to submit an essay. The easiest way to submit a paper is by file upload. To locate a file on your computer for submission, click on the "browse" button. Papers can be submitted in MS Word, Wordperfect, RTF, PDF, PostScript, and plain text formats. The other way is to cut and paste your text into the box provided. After you click on the Submit  button, the paper is sent toTurnitin.com and processed. You will receive a digital receipt to confirm your submission.  Please record the submission number you will be given, and note the date and time you submitted the essay, in case there are any difficulties. If you do not receive a submission "receipt", that means that the paper has not been properly submitted.
