Essays are to be approximately 15 pages (and any event, not less than 12 typed pages)

(A) Assessment criteria - substantive

Does the essay discuss Childhood perspectives? You need not agree with the perspective(s) but you should demonstrate an awareness of the relevant perspectives and an ability to use it in analysis. Indicate why you agree or disagree with it.

Does the essay take into account any relevant course materials - readings, lectures, discussions?

(B) Assessment criteria - general theory and methodological skills

  • Do you have a clearly stated thesis?
  • Are the key concepts clearly defined?
  • Are the relationships among the concepts consistent and logical?
  • Have you considered alternative and competing explanations?
  • Have you accurately represented the authors you have cited?
• Empirical
  • Does the evidence address the theoretical issues raised in the essay (i.e., are they relevant to the essay's concepts and relationships)?
  • Have you considered competing, especially potentially falsifying, evidence?
