Patient Presentation
  • A 72 year old woman has been referred to your care from emergency.
  • The emergency record depicts that she has collapsed due to the loss of consciousness.
  • There is evidence of facial trauma.
  • Her EKG results appear normal.

The following questions are asked to ascertain additional patient history:

  1. Did anyone witness the event?
  2. What were the premonitory symptoms?
  • Sudden loss of consciousness.
  • She fell, hitting her chin on a park bench.
  • No lightheadedness or aura present prior to the loss of consciousness.
  • Aura would suggest seizure, and feeling lightheaded, diaphoretic, nauseated would point towards vasodepressor (vasovagal) mechanism.
