Patient Presentation
  • A 72 year old woman has been referred to your care from emergency.
  • The emergency record depicts that she has collapsed due to the loss of consciousness.
  • There is evidence of facial trauma.
  • Her EKG results appear normal.

The following questions are asked to ascertain additional patient history:

  1. Did anyone witness the event?
  2. What were the premonitory symptoms?
  3. Was there evidence indicating tongue biting or incontinence?
  • Neither was observed.
  • Both incontinence and tongue biting are signs suggesting a seizure or convulsion.
  • Their occurrence would suggest a neurological origin for the syncope.
