Immersion Programmes
Reflections from Mr Michael Milhausen
Head of French Immersion
Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School

"Immersion French Programmes began in Ontario in 1968 in Ottawa and in Toronto. In the 1970's, Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and his government policies such as official bilingualism and multiculturalism, along with various political pressures, opened up the funding for Immersion French Programmes."

"Another force to be reckoned with was the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) that came into existence in 1977. They pushed for immersion more than anyone else. I don't know where we would be without CPF and the Ontario Modern Languages Teachers' Association."
