• understand how medicine responded to general societal trends such as urbanization and modernization.
• understand how science and technology affected the practice of medicine and ideas about health.
• understand that concepts of medicine as “legitimate” or “professional” changed according to social values, and how and by whom this legitimacy is defined.
• understand the role of the doctor and the patient in treatment.
