Nothing definitive is known about Jean Laidlaw's ancestry.
According to a 2004 report by professional researcher Duncan Adamson,
commissioned by Ted Sadler of Lockport, New York, the following
information is known: (a) Laidlaw was not a common name in Upper
Annandale at the probable time of her birth, and (b) two couples,
John Laidlaw (or Laidley) and Janet Bryden and also John Laidlaw
and Christian Halliday, are recorded as having had children in the
1740s. None of these was named Jean, but at that time, especially
during the prolonged church vacancy in Moffat, many children's names
were not registered. In addition there were Laidlaw families living
in Kirkpatrick Juxta in the 1760s.
