Portable XRF Analyzer Workshop: Analysis and Interpretation of XRF Data from Non-uniform Objects - June 17, 2011

***Workshop Program*** is now available here.

Portable XRF AnalyzerSince the first field portable non-dispersive XRF analyzer with a scintillation counter became commercially available in 1964, it has evolved into a versatile non-destructive device to receive fast results with minimum set up and calibrations. Easily transported to job site has made the portable XRF suitable to a wide range of applications, such as metal alloy determination in scrap yards, in-situ study of contaminants in soil and drill core mapping during mineral exploration. Recently, it also becomes a valued teaching tool in chemistry and mineralogy classes.

However, limitations do exist for portable XRF. XRF is a surface or near surface technique. The analyzer measures only the portion of the sample directly in front of the detector window; and it measures everything in front of the detector window. Without the knowledge of the source of errors and analytical objective, the results became meaningless. In addition, the portable XRF analyzer is safe to operate only when used properly.

This Portable XRF Analyzer Workshop will include:

  1. Components of a Typical Portable XRF Analyzer
  2. Identify the X-ray Emission Lines and Qualitative Analysis
  3. Source of Errors / Sample Preparations / Optimizing Analysis
  4. Calibration Process and Quantification
  5. Pitfalls and Realities of using a Portable XRF Analyzer
  6. Field Analysis and Case Studies
  7. Practical Exercises - Knowing the SPECTRA Software
  8. Radiation Safety

Canadian Level-1 XRF Operator Licensing Exam Training (1/2 day) – June 18, 2011

Any person who intends to operate a portable (hand-held) XRF in Canada must be certified by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). This workshop provides licensing examination preparation conducted by a NRCan certified XRF Operator trainer. Upon completion of the training, the participants who registered for will receive the XRF Training Declaration for submission to NRCan for certification application.

WORKSHOP REGISTRATION FEES
By April 30 - $ 350.00 CAD
