Krug's Trunk Test

This is Steve Krug's test for how well a website does in terms of navigation. Imagine that you have been whacked on the head, stuffed into the trunk of someone's car, and they've driven you off into the wilds of the web, and dropped you off at some random page. Here are the questions you should be able to answer:

  1. What site is this? (Site identification, brand)
  2. What page am I on? (Page name or page identification)
  3. What are the major sections of this site? (Persistent navigation /Sections)
  4. What are my options at this level? ( Local navigation)
  5. Where am I in the scheme of things? (Is there any way to identify where you are in relationship to the rest of the site/to other things your user may be looking for? You are here” indicator.)
  6. How can I search? (Site search)
