A caution about taking mit 220

Be prepared to spend extra time

You are going to have to spend some time outside the class and lab times to work on your assignments. The paucity of class readings compensates for this somewhat, but the reality is that the best way to learn any new computer technology is to play around with it. This means that to do well, you're going to have to be willing to spend some time figuring things out.

Some of the most successful students in mit220 have had no experience with web design or any of the programs we use.

Web design is addictive

Also, it's worth noting that some people find web design highly addictive, once they get their teeth sunk into it. It's easy to work on some problem -- technical or theoretical -- and suddenly find that hours have whiled away. Remember this when you're deciding if you'd like to take this course, and in figuring out WHEN you'd like to take this course.

My warning for students in their final year is that this course may distract you from your other work, and there's still no guarantee of a really high mark.

There's other good stuff too

On the other hand, this course will help you learn some valuable skills, both practical and theoretical, that should help you throughout your careers.  And it can be a lot of fun, learning how to do web design and how to play with digital images.  Finally, there are the rewards of having the chance to do something truly creative.

I hope that helps you make an informed decision!  And if you need to ask me any questions, you can email me.

All the best,

Mark
