Cognition and Language Characteristics of Students with LD

Reading assignment : Bender Text, Chapter 4.

More FACTS AND QUESTIONS TO PONDERaniques.gif (6900 bytes) ..........as your group prepares Assignment 5.

Various assessments use measured characteristics assumed to be related to a student’s learning.

  • intelligence

  • attention

  • memory

  • cognitive style

  • language

Common IQ assessments include tests to measure these characteristics. What tools do you use (would you use) to measure the characteristics related to cognition and learning?

Carroll’s model of aptitude

  • concept of aptitude (intelligence)-->more optimistic
  • function of time needed to learn relative to time spent learning
  • intelligence, conceptually, is defined as an alterable variable

How does this historic concept relate to our recent concerns for on-task behaviour?

Zentall’s work on distractibility

  • indicated certain intentional distracters may be beneficial for some students with LD
  • contradicts teacher -rating studies that students with LD tend to be overly distractible

What do you think about the possibility of teacher expectancy as one possible cause for error in this teacher-rating research?

Review the definitions for syntax and semantics. How is semantics more comprehensive than mere vocabulary and definitions of words?

Decline in research on syntax and semantics-why?

  • too few early language researchers attempted to demonstrate how syntactic and semantic deficits among students with LD could lead to other academic problems
  • result--> shift to more complex language processes in communication, pragmatics (language in social contexts)

Does remedial work on syntax and semantics result in improvement in reading and language arts overall? What do you think? What have you found?

Code switching among students with LD

  • some studies suggest that -->students with LD do it
  • some studies suggest that -->students with LD don’t do it

What do you think? Can you give some examples of a student with LD code switching?

Test of Language Development (TOLD by Hammill and Newcomer)

  • currently one of most widely used tests of language

If your school district has a copy, review it and post your comments and/or questions.
