Reference Books and Texts

All of following texts are represented in your reading package. In case you'd like to look into ordering the complete book, here is the relevant information you'll need, and my annotation on the text itself.

Adobe Photoshop Classroom-in-a-Book

This series has been quite good, but I haven't seen the most recent version. You might also want to buy one of the H.O.T. manuals from New Riders.

Creative HTML.2

Lynda Weinman and William Weinman, New Riders, ISBN 0-780735-709720, © 2001
Less important than it used to be, but this is still an excellent resource that combines the basics of html coding and how to put together good web graphics.

Designing Web Graphics

Lynda Weinman, New Riders Publishing, ISBN 1-56205-949-1, © 1999
I think this is one of the best texts I've seen to explain the ins-and-outs of creating good images for the web. Weinman has come from the print world, so she can help you put that into perspective too.

Don't Make Me Think*

Steve Krug, New Riders, ISBN 0-7897-23210-7
© 2000
Best book on usability. Ever.

Dreamweaver H-O-T Hands-On Training*

Caro Green with Lynda Weinman, Peachpit Press, ISBN 0-201-74133-4, © 2002
This is an excellent manual for learning to use Dreamweaver. In fact, I've found most of the series quite good. And to prove that I mean that, here's a link to her website.

Dreamweaver, The Missing Manual

David Sawyer McFarland, O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00349-8, © 2002
Not as easy to follow as the H.O.T. books, but still quite good, and in some ways, more comprehensive than the others.

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2e*

Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville, O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00035-9, © 2002, 1998
If you're serious about doing web design and architecture, then this is a must-have book.

Learning Web Design

Jennifer Niederst, O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00036-7
© 2001
This is quite a good comprehensive introduction to all of the issues in web design. It doesn't tackle the digital image part of the equation very well, but otherwise, it's a complete look at the field.

Unusually Useful Web Book

June Cohen, New Riders Publishing, ISBN 0-7357-1206-9, © 2003
This text is really a gem -- almost every page has useful information on creating websites that are easy-to-use. Highly recommended.

Web Design in a Nutshell, 2e

Jennifer Niederst, O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00196-7
© 2001, 1999

If you think you're going to be more of a coding web designer than a WYSIWYG designer, then I'd say this is also a must-have desk reference.

* these books are assigned in the other course I teach, LIS 523. You may be able to find an unpurchased copy in the Book Store under that course shelf.
