Module 2 Strand D1
Learning Characteristics of LD Students in Reading

Reading Assignment: Bender Text, Chapter 6

ASK YOURSELF, "How well do I understand reading instruction? How much do I know about, understand and am able to explain about the following topics:

  • cloze procedures
  • word bank activities
  • sight-word activities
  • phonic/sight-word debates
  • phonological awareness ?"

Seven Learning Characteristics in Reading Exhibited by LD Students

1. Overdependency
2. Difficulty Monitoring Performance
3. Failure To Modify Strategies

  • reading a textbook requires different skills than reading a story, LD students fail to modify their reading strategies accordingly
  • Note: An excellent informal reading inventory-The Qualitative Reading Inventory-II (QRI-II) Leslie & Caldwell; School of Education; Marquette University; Milwaukee, Wi. 53233 ISBN 0-673-99086-9
  • differs from other IRIs
  • narrative and expository passages at each pre-primer to junior-high level
  • passages represent structures / topics found in basal readers and content-area textbooks
  • passages (pre-primer through grade two) presented with/without pictures
  • knowledge of concepts important to understanding of passage assessed
  • comprehension measured two ways:

a) through analysis of student’s retelling
b) through answers to explicit and implicit comprehension questions

  • used to measure student’s awareness and use of various metacognitive strategies for comprehending text
  • diagnostic options include:

a) estimated reading levels
b) suggested directions for instructional intervention
c) profile of student’s reading ability

4. Memory Problems

5. Difficulty Mastering Letter Sounds and Vocabulary

6. Difficulty in Generalization

7. Difficulty in Approaching a Task Positively

PONDER PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED LEARNING STRATEGIES (MODULE 1):

How can we get regular classroom teachers to use learning strategies which address the above characteristics of LD students more consistently and effectively? Post comments for discussion in  Module 2 Assignments and Posting Information in Caucus.

Post any learning/reading strategy ideas (not previously mentioned in Module 1) in  Module 2 Bulletin Board of Ideas in Caucus. See the "How-To Construct Your Own" learning strategy in  B.B. of Ideas.
