Module 2 Strand G2
Typical Behaviours and Interactions of LD Students
(Continued)
Focus of Studies on LD students
and Adaptive Behaviour:
1) Task Orientation (an
interaction between the several discrete aspects of attention)
- students without LD on-task 60-85% of time
- students with LD on-task 30-60% of time
- strategies to combat task-orientation problems:
-physical proximity
-educational climate free from overt
distractions
-instructional methods focus on
educational strategies to do task
-students with LD more off-task during seat work
than during teacher-monitored small group work
2) Disruptive Behaviour
- range from passively staring out window to throwing
objects during off-task time
- research suggests students with LD are no more
disruptive in classrooms than students without LD
3) Hyperactivity
- little research has demonstrated hyperactivity as a
characteristic present in students with LD more than students without
- similar to impulsive characteristics, not all
students with LD demonstrate ADHD or hyperactivity
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
...Is it any wonder that these students take twice
the amount of time to complete seat work?
Has anyone seen or used the Weller-Strawser
Adaptive Scales, elementary or secondary?
