Module 3 Strand I2
Issues in the Field

Modular Readings: Chapter 14, Bender text, pages -   372-387

Major Presentation(s) - Caucus Conference

FUTURE OF THE FIELD-LEARNING DISABILITIES?

Field began as result of political considerations

Current political situations may impact significantly

1) budget concerns, e.g. locally, provincially

2) REI

3) move toward inclusion

4) psychoneurological assessment

5) metacognitive instruction

6) multiple intelligences theory

REFLECT ON: What changes could each of these factors bring into the field?

SUBTYPING RESEARCH-HOPE FOR THE FUTURE?

1) researchers have begun to identify smaller, more homogenous groups within LD populations

2) should enable researchers to recommend particular types of educational interventions for various types of LD

TEACHER BURNOUT-HOW CAN WE REDUCE/ELIMINATE IT?

1) occurs among less experienced teachers-less efficient in meeting demands of job

2) can be related to use of outdated instructional ideas

3) can be related to lack of professionalism

4) combat by setting professional goals for each year

5) some school districts require a professional plan (PIP-professional improvement package or PGP-professional growth plan)

PIP-WHAT ACTIVITIES SHOULD IT INCLUDE?

1) intended to specify a teacher’s goal in professional development for the year

2) reading research

3) applying research

4) conducting classes

QUESTIONS, THOUGHTS, POINTS TO PONDERaniques.gif (6900 bytes)

Reflect on the Teacher Competencies outlined in INTEREST BOX 14.1, p.379.

In 1995 the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)presented international standards for the preparation and certification of special education teachers. The document which is available through CEC is called "WHAT EVERY SPECIAL EDUCATOR MUST KNOW", 3rd Edition. This is an excellent starting point.

CEC is currently challenging us to become Professionally Recognized Special Educators. The PRSE certificate is a recognition by CEC that the recipient has met CEC s professional education and experience requirements and is committed to practice within the Code of Ethics and Standards for Professional Practice of the special education profession.
