This lesson will take you through the basics of how to select parts of an image. This is another Tutorial that comes in the Photoshop package, and you will find the file you need in the Applications folder at: Photoshop/Training/Photoshop5/Tour/

Marquee Tool

  1. Click on the rectangular tool (top left of toolbox)
  2. Drag it horizontally (top left to bottom right) and move the selection around. Note that it just moves the selection.
  3. Place the marquee too inside the selection - pointer tool
  4. Still not happy with placement? Hit Select>deselect or click outside the box
  5. Reselect.
Elliptical tool

  1. Click on the magnifying glass and zoom in on blueberry. (X2 = 300%)
  2. Hold down the mouse button to switch to elliptical tool
  3. Move the pointer over the blueberry and drag top-left to bottom-right. Don't release the mouse button!
  4. You can reposition the selection by holding down mouse button and holding down the spacebar - this allows you to move the selection.
  5. Release the spacebar-if you drag now, it will change the size and shape of the selection.
  6. Release the mouse button when you have it centered.
Selecting from a centre point

  1. Another way to do this is to select from the centre out. Deselect everything (select>deselect or click outside the circle)
  2. Position the marquee tool at the approximate centre
  3. Click and begin dragging. Without releasing the mouse button, hold down the Option key and continue dragging. The selection is centred over the starting point.
  4. Tip: if you also hold down the shift key, it will create a perfect circle.
